We are now only one month away from the 2 day Cruising Women program that we will be giving in Annapolis, Maryland on April 23-24, 2015. The program last year was AMAZING! We had so much fun. Please come join us! Here are the details.

Pam Wall, Beth Leonard and Kathy Parsons team up to offer an in-depth two-day program just for women – to introduce women to, and prepare them for cruising.

This program is directed to women:

who are introduced to the dream of cruising by a husband, or boyfriend or partner, and want to know “What is cruising like? — Do I want to do it?”

who like the idea of cruising with their partner or even alone, but don’t know if they are skilled enough, smart enough, young enough, rich enough, or brave enough to pull it off….

who know they want to go cruising, and now want to acquire the skills and knowledge to get out there and make it safe and fun.

For all these women, we have organized a unique program to answer your questions and give you the skills and knowledge you will need:

First of all, we introduce you to cruising, help you learn what it is like, in all its variations – aboard sailboat and powerboat, cruising close to home, or to the Caribbean, or around the world – sailing with your partner, or family, or by yourself.

We cover the skills that you need to acquire and help you figure out what you know already and what you still need. We assist you in putting together your personal plan to go cruising.

We spend time aboard several different boats, in small groups, learning the jargon, the equipment that we live with, discussing daily routines and safety, what works and what doesn’t.

We spend time aboard several different boats
Photo: Barbara Dahn

And most importantly, you will have LOTS of time to ask your questions and to raise your concerns about cruising.

This is a very personal, and fun course. We will talk, laugh, tie knots, heave lines, poke around with equipment, discuss ALL your questions and practical issues. You will come out of this weekend with an understanding of the cruising life and ready to make your dream come true.

We hope you can join us – the Cruising Women 2-day program will take place, during the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show, April 23, 24 in Annapolis, Maryland, as part of the 4-day Cruisers University.

There is no way to express my gratitude for how gracious you all are! You truly made me feel like there is no stupid question. Your range of experiences and expertise was amazing and very much a blessing!

It takes the fear factor out of cruising.

It reassured me that I am not foolish or crazy for pursuing this dream, this lifestyle. It also helped me believe that I can learn the skills needed to do this, even be good at it!

Thanks so much for all the sharing, information, humor, and encouragement. And so non-intimidating! It was great! We appreciate all of you. Terrific job!

This seminar assured me even more that this is what I want to do and took some of my fears and worries away.

The dynamic of the three instructions was phenomenal!

Even though cruising seems scary sometimes, you have all made it seem very possible!! Thank you so much!

The wide range of topics covered answered many questions I didn’t know I had.

I found that other women have the same fears and concerns that I had.

Hearing the instructors’ first hand experiences was invaluable.

Great, enthusiastic instructors who clearly love cruising.

Totally enjoyed it!

Jimmy Cornell (World Cruising Routes, et al),

Lee Chesneau (meteorologist),

Beth Leonard and Evans Starzinger (World Voyaging Handbook and two-time circumnavigators),

Pam Wall (circumnavigator, expert on outfitting, and who we all love…),

Laura Sudarski (medical expert),

Richard Hudson (high latitude sailor),

Steve Bowden (communications specialist),

and Doina Cornell (who sailed as a child, and later ran the popular website Noonsite).

There will be classroom time plus a poolside liferaft demonstration and a view from the bridge simulation.

The seminar will be held at the Maritime Institute Conference Center in Linthicum, Maryland – so you can attend both the seminar and the Annapolis Sailboat Show during the same weekend.

Here is what Women and Cruising’s Pam Wall had to say about her part in the program:

Ladies, world cruising Ladies!

The Blue Planet Odyssey and the Atlantic Odyssey are having a fantastic two day event at this year’s Annapolis Boat Show October 13 and 14th. I am so excited about this opportunity to have Jimmy Cornell and his daughter, Doina, putting together an incredible amount of information for offshore cruising couples.

I am honored to be on the Long Distance Cruising for Women Panel at 1730 on Sunday, October 13 at the famous and very interesting Maritime Institute Conference Center in Linthicum, Maryland, not far from the Annapolis Boat Show site!

I will be with Doina Cornell, Beth Leonard, and Dr. Laura Sudarski. All of us have had vast offshore cruising experience and want to answer any questions you ladies might have regarding, provisioning, responsibility, children aboard, medical questions, heavy weather sailing situations, you name it, we will help you!! Come with your questions and let the panel advise you on so many things that will make you feel more empowered as you do your offshore cruising.

We hope we can give you the encouragement to feel really empowered, excited, and knowledgeable about any offshore cruising you will be doing. It is truly life on a higher plane! I am not strong, I am not tall, I am getting a bit long in the tooth, but I will never stop loving my time at sea, my landfalls, my exploring new places, all from the comfort of my own little boat! It is a life we should all cherish and appreciate through confidence and joy in what we are doing!

I’d like to let you know about the Cruising Women program that Pam Wall, Beth Leonard and I will be giving at Cruisers University on April 25-26 in Annapolis, Maryland.

Last April, as Pam Wall and I finished our second year as faculty at Cruisers University, (a fun weekend in Annapolis of in-depth courses to prepare people for cruising), we were approached by Paul Jacobs, the director of Cruisers University and manager of the Annapolis Sailboat and Powerboat Shows:

“I would like you two to put together an in-depth two-day program on cruising, just for women.”

TWO DAYS! Imagine what we could do in two whole days –MUCH, MUCH more than is ever possible in a one hour Women and Cruising seminar! Of course we were excited! But….

“We want BOATS – we don’t want to do this all in a classroom – we want to take women aboard several boats, and spend time aboard learning about the equipment and routines aboard. To see it, touch it, use it…”

“Fine”, said Paul.

“And”, we said, “We would like to invite our good friend, Beth Leonard, to join us – together the three of us would make a fantastic team. We want to give women a variety of perspectives to help each woman find her own unique answers.”

“Excellent”, said Paul.

Since then, Pam, Beth and I have been planning how to make the most of this fantastic opportunity to introduce women to, and prepare women for, cruising.

We women approach cruising from various perspectives. For some of us, it was first the dream of our husband, or boyfriend or partner, and our first question was “What is cruising like? Do I want to do it?” For others, it was an individual or joint dream – we LIKE the idea of cruising, but don’t know if we are skilled enough, smart enough, young enough, rich enough, brave enough to pull it off….

And for yet others, we KNOW we want to go cruising, we know we can do it, and we want to acquire the skills and knowledge so we can get out there and make a success of cruising.

This course is designed for all of these women, to answer their questions and needs. First of all, we are going to introduce you to cruising, help you learn what it is like, in all its variations – aboard sailboat and powerboat, cruising close to home, or to the Caribbean, or around the world – sailing with your partner, or family, or by yourself. We are going to cover the skills that you need to acquire and help you figure out what you know already and what you still need. We will spend time aboard several different boats, in small groups, learning about the equipment that we live with, discussing daily routines, what works and what doesn’t.

And most importantly, you will have LOTS of time to ask your questions and to raise your concerns about cruising. This is a very personal, and fun course. We will talk, laugh, tie knots, heave lines, poke around with equipment, discuss ALL your questions and practical issues – and come out of this whole weekend ready to understand the cruising life to make your dream come true.

We hope you can join us – the Cruising Women 2-day program will take place, during the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show, April 25-26 in Annapolis, Maryland, as part of the 4-day Cruisers University.

Registration for this unique event is through Cruisers University. For those of you who might want to attend Cruisers University as a couple, there are programs on Diesel Maintenance or Weather (or other elective classes on Friday) that your partner might want to attend while you are in the Cruising Women program. And there are lots of elective classes that either of you can attend after the class on Saturday and Sunday – everything from outfitting to weather to cruising the Bahamas or Caribbean.

For more information, contact Cruisers University, or Nancy Grisham at 410-263-7802. You may also contact me, Pam Wall or Beth Leonard for more information on our program. We look forward to a fun and rewarding and empowering weekend with you!

Join Pam Wall and me for an amazing weekend in Annapolis April 26-29!

Cruisers University will be held in conjunction with the new Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show and will offer 4 days of seminars to prepare you for cruising.

Pam and I are part of an impressive line-up of instructors, including Nigel Calder, Lee Chesneau, George Day, Herb McCormick, Gary Jobson, Cindy Wallach, Liza Copeland, John Martino, Jim Drury and many others.

You can attend the 3-day Cruising Preparation series, the 4-day Master Cruisers series, or the 1-day Cruisers Education series. There will be both classroom and on-board classes. There are technical series of classes covering diesel maintenance, electrical systems and modern navigation, plus cruising destination series (Bahamas, Caribbean, etc), and many individual seminars.

Pam and I thoroughly enjoyed Cruisers University last year and are excited to be back again this year. The energy and enthusiasm in the seminar rooms is contagious and our discussions are always lively and in-depth.

Cruisers University catches attendees at a crucial point: the men and women attending have a dream to go cruising but it is still an uncertain dream. Over the course of the weekend, they learn so much that the dream becomes a shared plan, and attendees leave eager and prepared to make their dream a reality. I love being able to contribute to that transformation. And what better place for it all to begin in than in Annapolis, truly a sailor’s town and home of the big Fall Annapolis Boat Show!

Here are the seminars I will be giving at Cruisers University:

Provisioning and Storage Strategies

Friday, April 27: 1:45-3:00pm
Saturday, April 28: 1:45-3:00pm

Instructor: Kathy Parsons

Provisioning, trivial ashore, becomes a key skill for successful cruising. We will discuss provisioning from start to finish, beginning with factors that affect what you will (and won’t) want to take: where you plan to cruise, how you cruise, your eating and entertaining style, your boat, storage space and equipment (eg. refrigeration and freezer space or lack of). Avoiding LOB (lost on board) – strategies and systems for organizing, stowing, and inventorying (manual, computerized, and app-based). Preserving what you have aboard (vacuum sealing, drying, storage containers and systems). Reprovisioning in foreign countries: making use of local products, major reprovisioning areas, duty-free areas, shipping parts and supplies in, what you can get where. Plus lots of useful handouts and downloads to help you get started including provisioning lists of food, supplies and spares, multilingual reprovisioning lists, etc.

The galley is the heart of every cruising boat. It is the one part of the boat that gets used every day whether at sea or in port. This seminar will help you make the most of your galley. We will discuss everything from layout to refrigeration, from dishes, to pressure cookers and other equipment. You will receive handouts listing gear that cruising women consider essential aboard (and what they took off their boats!), and the things learned along the way that make cooking aboard and provisioning easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

If you are in the process of shopping for a boat, you will learn what to look for and what your main decision points in the prospective galley should be (including a checklist of considerations). If you are preparing to go cruising, you will learn how to equip your galley, what’s worth packing and what you can leave behind. And if you are already out cruising, you will enjoy seeing how others do things and pick up new tips.

This webinar is an ideal format for us cruisers who are spread all over the globe. All you need is Internet to attend.

We will meet online for 6 evening classes (1.5 hours per class).

If you can’t make every class, you can log on later and listen to the recording and then meet me on Skype office hours to practice or ask questions.

Plus you will have access to all audio files, handouts, flash cards and class recordings long after the webinar is over so you can keep practicing and learning.

We offered this webinar for the first time in June-July and had students from the Canary Islands to Vancouver. It was a big success with total beginners as well as cruisers who already knew some Spanish.

You can read feedback from the first group of students on Seven Seas U. But this response from one student will give you a feel:

“Thank you so much for the wonderful classes. You’ve given us such a great start on learning Spanish and we are determined to continue working with all the super helpful materials you’ve provided.

That last class was amazing – it’s like a light bulb came on when you showed us how to put the verbs together with the mini-conjugations we had already learned and open up a whole world of being able to communicate in sentence form!”

Duration: 6 – 1.5 hour sessions
Date: Mon.-Sept. 26, Thurs-Sept. 29, Monday-Oct. 3, Mon.-Oct 10, Thurs.-Oct. 13, Mon.-Oct. 17 at 20:00 Eastern or 17:00 Pacific (GMT 00:00)

So you can find the parts you need and fix your boat.

To make friends with local people.

So you aren’t relegated to the “local cruiser handlers” who drive cruisers around in taxis, but can be a free-range cruiser and feel comfortable exploring on your own.

So you can eat and drink really well.

So you can travel inland on your own.

So you have enough Spanish to be courteous to people and don’t come across as abrupt or rude.

Because another language gives you another life:
“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” ‒Frank Smith

So you can solve mysteries:
‒”What are these people doing in a glass house in the middle of this esplanade of Santo Domingo?
‒They are filming a reality show for Spain.”

To get what you want.

To get help if you need it or to be able to help others.

Because you can!
Becoming fluent isn’t easy, but learning enough to communicate and have fun is DOABLE with the right approach!

Our next Seven Seas U Happy Hooking webinar is scheduled for June 7. We’ve had great response from previous attendees. It’s based on our book, “Happy Hooking. The Art of Anchoring.” We cover the newest anchors and how they rate against the old standbys as well as the newest techniques that help you drop and retrieve your anchors like an expert.

If you’ve never sampled a webinar, it’s the best thing to come along for learning in the comfort of your own home or boat. All you need is a computer and broadband.

We’ll be transmitting from Ireland, you’ll be chatting with us from wherever, and it will be an interactive experience to remember. Ask your most pressing questions online or email us afterwards. We’re here to help.

So if you want to brush up on what’s new out there that can help you stay put and wake up where you went to sleep, join us on June 7. To register, just go to the Seven Seas U website.

If you can’t make the live webinar, you can still download a recording for viewing at your leisure or you can sample our Anchoring a Sailboat Clinic at NauticEd.

NauticEd is a comprehensive new educational website for sailors, offering bareboat certification for chartering among many other courses for cruisers.

The Anchoring Clinic covers most of the same material as the webinar but in a self-paced written online course. It is set up in modules with a short test after each module.

Once you pass all the module tests, you’ll receive a certificate of completion. That certificate satisfies one of the requirements of the Bareboat Certification offered by NauticEd. You don’t need to complete the whole series to take our course. If you’re already a competent cruiser but just want a quick update on what’s new in anchors and anchoring, you can review this at your leisure.

NauticEd has some very useful apps and sailing games available free of charge so visit NauticEd website and check out our anchoring clinic.

I am pleased to offer 10% off the price of the Anchoring a Sailboat Clinic to Women and Cruising! Just enter hookbook10 as the promo code. Once you complete the course, you can also set up your own promo code (under the referrals tab when you log in) to get $10 off any additional courses everytime someone signs up for a course using your new referral promo code.

The most comprehensive resource on anchoring is our book, “Happy Hooking. The Art of Anchoring.” It is available at coastalboating.net and at amazon.com.You can take it with you wherever you go.

Just this month it was endorsed by Practical Boat Owner in the UK after getting loads of favorable reviews in the States.

I’ll be starting a blog post with anchoring tips for women in the months to come, so send me your pressing questions, your pet peeves, and your best anchoring stories. We tackle them all together!

The Women and Cruising seminars are super for asking your questions about cruising (anything goes!).

We love these seminars and all the new friends we have made doing them. In fact, I love the seminars so much I am packing up my bags and leaving the boat in beautiful Eleuthera, Bahamas (with sand in my shoes) to fly to the Oakland show. When we’re not giving seminars we will be hanging out at the Author’s Corner. I will be selling my French for Cruisers and Spanish for Cruisers books plus a new audio. Come by and talk cruising! We look forward to seeing you there!

Blue Water Sailing is the Presenting Sponsor of the Seminar Series. The one-hour seminars are FREE with your paid show admission. Attendees will receive two issues of Blue Water Sailing and a complimentary subscription to Cruising Compass.

You will leave this seminar with a list of Caribbean destinations that you won’t want to miss and practical tips that will reduce cultural misunderstandings and make your travel more safe and enjoyable.

Night Sailing webinar

Date: Thursday March 10 at 8pm EST (7pm CST)

Instructor: Nancy Erley

Duration: 1.5 hours

This fairly technical webinar covers night vision, navigation aids and lights on shore, identifying ships, collision avoidance at night, night time deck safety protocols, watch scheduling and crew overboard.
Nancy Erley led two voyages from Seattle around the world aboard her Orca 38 sailboat, Tethys.

“As the skipper of an all-woman crew, Nancy fashioned a circumnavigation that should go down in the record books as one of the soundest, most seamanlike journeys in the modern cruising era. Like all competent voyages, Tethys circumnavigation was notable for its lack of disasters.” George Day, publisher Blue Water Sailing magazine.

Founder of Tethys Offshore, Nancy teaches the skills to take a small boat across an ocean, from competent crew to ocean skipper. She holds her USCG 50-ton Master of Oceans and 100-ton Master Near Coastal licenses, is an Instructor Evaluator-Ocean for the International Sail and Power Association, a ham radio operator (ki7dp), and an advanced scuba diver and delivery skipper.

In 2006 Nancy was presented with the Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award sponsored by BoatUS and the National Women’s Sailing Association. The award honors a male or female who has built a record of achievement in inspiring, educating and enriching the lives of women through sailing.

Nancy is now in the Pacific Northwest scheduling learning cruises for women aboard Tethys. She also offers private instruction aboard the learner’s boat for both men and women, ocean deliveries as captain or onboard advisor, and voyaging consultation.
The Pardeys will be speaking at:

and OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship in Newport, California.

Topics for each venue are different, ranging from “Encouraging your partner to love cruising”, to “Handling storms at sea”. A complete list of seminar topics, dates, and times can be viewed at the Pardeys’ website, www.landlpardey.com.

Lin’s new book will be launched during this tour.

In Bull Canyon Lin turns to an “adventure on land.” This is the story of the four years the couple spent far from the sea, building the boat of their dreams in California’s remote Bull Canyon.

First there were the rats in the ceiling, then the floods, then the fires, then the visiting cougar … life in Bull Canyon was daunting and dangerous. Often Lin wondered just what they were doing so far from their customary “home” on the open seas.

Bull Canyon joins the annals of great tales of homesteading, told in the warm, funny, and insightful voice of a true storyteller. You can read excerpts from the book at www.linpardey.com.

Here is what the first reviewers have to say…

“Lin Pardey has captured the very heart of a full life (the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable) in Bull Canyon. It is a must read for anyone with an adventurous spirit or those who need to be encouraged to follow their dreams.” Lee Stanley, Award-winning filmmaker, producer (Grid Iron Gang)

“It’s great. Very very funny and insightful. Captures a time and place.” Herb McCormick, Editor at Large, Cruising World/Sailing World.

“Lin Pardey makes it clear why she has such a following among her sailing readers: she’s a great observer of human nature and a natural storyteller. With Bull Canyon, she has bridged the divide between sailors and landsmen and will touch readers of every inclination.” Karen Larsen, founder and editor, Good Old Boat

Lin and Larry have voyaged more than 200,000 miles together on self-built engine-free wooden boats.

Their voyages have taken them around the world, both east-about and west-about, including counter-to-the-prevailing-wind passages south of the great southern capes.

The books and DVD programs created by Lin and Larry have been credited with launching thousands of dreams by inspiring and empowering three generations of sailors. In 2010 the Pardeys were awarded The Cruising Club of America’s prestigious Far Horizons Award.
