The Women and Cruising Team — Kathy Parsons, Pam Wall & Gwen Hamlin — is going online LIVE for our first ever Women & Cruising Webinar, through the auspices of Seven Seas U, the online seminar project of SSCA (Seven Seas Cruising Association.)  The date is January 19 at 2000 EDT (8pm East Coast time).

If you haven’t already participated in one of the Seven Seas U webinars, this amazing technology will bring all three of us right into your living room…or salon…or wherever your computer is set up.  And just like our live W&C seminars, you will be able to ask any questions you have about the cruising experience and hear responses from the point of view of three experienced cruising women — whose ideas are sometimes similar and sometimes quite different.    If we manage to keep all our ducks lined up onscreen we will even be able to include feedback from members of the audience just as we do in our live groups.Every time we’ve offered this seminar, the topics that come up are different, like an ongoing conversation. It’s all part of our philosophy that there is no one RIGHT way to do things, but many ways to work out what’s best for you from shared information.

Livia sends out a list of ten questions to cruisers who have cruised outside of their home country for at least two years and each week publishes an interview on her website.

Livia asked us to participate. Gwen Hamlin immediately got on the ball and answered her ten questions. (Perhaps this will inspire me to do the same…)

This week Livia published Gwen’s answers to her ten questions.

What did Livia ask Gwen? Here are a few of the questions:

  • What (if anything) do you wish someone had told you before you started cruising?
  • Share a piece of cruising etiquette
  • How did you (or did you) gain offshore experience prior to leaving?
  • When have you felt most in danger and what was the source?
  • Where was your favorite place to visit and why?

Gwen has a group of “admirals” – women cruisers scattered around the globe who email their input to Gwen on each month’s topic. Gwen and her admirals have been doing this every month now for almost 4 years, and this month we are publishing Gwen’s 44th column!

We maintain an archive of all the past columns on our website. We publish them here one month after they appear in Latitudes and Attitudes. If you haven’t checked out this part of our website you should!

Gwen and her far-flung group of cruising women have discussed everything from how they got started cruising to why they do it, plus all those practical issues like outfitting and emergency skills and maintenance and guests aboard and laundry and fitness and singlehanding and communications and finances and …. (44 topics so far…!)

For the last three months, the admirals have been discussing their bookshelves – the books that merit precious room aboard their boats.

They are wrapping up this series this month as they talk about the reference books they carry aboard – their favorite references for seamanship, voyaging, weather, heavy weather sailing, maintenance,  etc.

Check out the column – #44 – Admiral’s Reference Shelf – and then let us know if we have missed any of your favorite reference books.

Perhaps you have even typed up a list of your own Ship’s Library. If you would like to share it with other cruisers, send it to us or send us a link to it on your website or blog and we will let Women and Cruising readers know about it.

Gwen Hamlin has been writing this column monthly for Latitudes and Attitudes magazine since September of 2006. Gwen has a group of women cruisers (Admirals) that she draws upon to discuss all sorts of topics that interest women cruisers. All past columns of Admiral’s Angle are now here on the Women and Cruising website, and they are searchable.

By the way, the Admiral’s Angle column had its start in our Women and Cruising seminars that we offer at boat shows. Gwen first joined Pam Wall and me for a Women and Cruising seminar at the Miami Boat Show in 2006. We always leave these seminars JAZZED, and in that post-seminar high, Gwen ran into Bob Bitchin, founder of Latitudes and Attitudes Magazine.

Gwen said “Gee, Bob, you should have a column in Lats and Atts about women and cruising issues.”

“Great”, Bob answered, “So write it.”

And that was how Admiral’s Angle got started 3 years ago.
