"Top Tips and Resources" PDF (7 pages - 266 K)
This is a handout that we give attendees at our Women and Cruising Seminars. It covers some of the most common topics that women have been raising in the seminars.
We describe alternatives, give some suggestions, and list resources that we have found useful.

Women ask about everything in our Women and Cruising seminars, from How do you handle finances, mail, health insurance, night passages? to How do I learn to sail?

As we mentioned resources, websites, organizations and books that we have found useful, we started listing them here to help women follow up after the seminars.

But like everything else, this page has grown, with other women sending in their favorite links.

Women and Cruising Resources on Boat Outfitting
One of the most stressful parts of preparing for cruising is figuring out how to outfit the boat, what equipment to install, and what to leave behind.

Outfitting

Fitting Out For World Cruising
The Cruising Compass interviewed Pam Wall, Outfitting Manager at West Marine, for a "Fitting Out for World Cruising" series. Here are links to the 5 installments of the series on the Blue Water Sailing website:

Get Onboard with E-Charting
Are you overwhelmed thinking about using a computer onboard for navigation? Diana and Mark Doyle, cruisers, have a new book out which gives a great introduction to electronic charting and uses of a computer onboard. The book also reviews 16 popular programs.

Outfitting Checklist (Download)
Pam Wall, Outfitting Manager at West Marine, has a useful Outfitting Checklist that you can download here. Useful in preparing for bluewater cruising, it lists essential spares and boat equipment for anchoring, docking, dinghy, electrical, electronics, engines, galley, navigation, etc. The file is 1.8 MB (4 pages) so it may take a minute to open.

SSCA - Marine Equipment Survey
The Seven Seas Cruising Association's on-line Equipment Survey was introduced early in 2008. Categories include virtually everything from stem to stern that you might want to research ... from the boat itself, to anchors, electronics and communications. It is open-ended and will remain available to members (and new members) for the indefinite future. The database of ratings and comments will be allowed to grow indefinitely over time, and all participants are able to return to their own surveys as they add gear to their boats and/or their experience as existing gear matures.

What to Wear in the Newport - Bermuda Race
Even if you're not going in the race, you might find Gill's article on foul weather gear helpful. Pam Wall says she loves her Gill foul weather gear.

Women and Cruising Resources on Rallies
A rally offers cruisers the opportunity to travel together with support and camraderie. Rallies are popular for certain longer passages and in parts of the world where it's helpful to have rally organizers pave the way and make arrangements, and to have support.

Beth Leonard

This web site has information on her books in addition to extensive information on the voyages that Beth and her partner Evans Starzinger have taken on their boats s/v Hawk and s/v Silk.

Debra Cantrell
When Debra Cantrell's husband suggested they make a major lifestyle change that entailed moving from the land-based lifestyle she adored, to a water-based, cruising lifestyle with which she had absolutely no familiarity, she decided to explore what other women did when their partners wanted to sell out and sail away. Changing Course chronicles her journey (and that of 100 other women) from a reluctant change maker to an embracer of the cruising lifestyle.

Diana Jessie
Diana Jessie has written The Cruising Woman's Advisor: How to Prepare for the Voyaging Life. Now in its second edition, Diana addresses the concerns of women cruisers including cruising roles and relationships, what life at sea is really like, and more.

Eileen Quinn
Music for sailors -- and normal people. Eileen writes and sings about the cruising life as she and her husband David sail aboard s/v Little Gidding - great music!

Virginia MacRobert: Gin's Tonic: Ocean Voyage, Inner Journey
Virginia MacRobert was born in Australia and raised on a farm in New South Wales, which prepared her for a life of adventure. A few careers and a few decades later she found herself in Hong Kong raising a large family, all of whom learned to sail. As the members matured and left home to develop their own careers she decided that the family sailing catamaran ought not to be sitting at the dock collecting barnacles and so prepared herself, the dog Henry, and the boat for an extended cruise, right around the world. The journey was life-changing and far more adventure was had than anticipated. "Gin's Tonic", her daily log, records this.

Janna Cawrse Esarey
Janna's book is called The Motion of the Ocean: 1 Small Boat, 2 Average Lovers, and a Women's Search for the Meaning of Wife. Read of Janna and Graeme's 17,000-mile journey and their quest to resolve the uncertainties so many couples face: How do you know if you've really found the One? How do you balance duty to others while preserving space for yourself? And, when the waters get rough, do you jump ship, or do you learn to navigate the world...together?

Liza Copeland
Liza Copeland shares her extensive cruising experience in four books: Cruising for Cowards offers practical advice for coastal and offshore cruising. Comfortable Cruising describes an extended cruise around North and Central America. Just Cruising and Still Cruising tell the story of Liza's 6 year circumnavigation with husband and three sons.

Margo Wood
Margo Wood wrote A Prairie Chicken Goes to Sea, a humorous and honest autobiography that has been a source of pleasure and inspiration to countless readers who have followed Margo's story as she dealt with the challenges of being a nervous, non-swimmer learning to become a boater as an adult. While dealing with life's good and bad times her indomitable spirit comes to the fore. Her determination to keep cruising and publishing Charlie's Charts following her husband's passing is a testament to her motto, "Life isn't a dress rehearsal so make every day count!"

Suzanne Giesemann
Suzanne Giesemann has written Living a Dream and It's Your Boat, too while sailing aboard s/v Liberty through the Americas, and across the Atlantic to the Med. This site has information on their travels, plus information to help others who wish to realize their cruising dream.

Books that Women write about Cruising | The Women and Cruising Bookstore
Our Cruising Women's Bookstore lists books that women write about cruising that our contributors have found useful. All the titles are linked directly to Amazon and Women and Cruising gets a small commission.

Cruising with Carol
Ron Ieva wrote Sailing with Carol to celebrate the sailing, passion and the deep intimate love he shared with his wife Carol. It spans almost fifty years, beginning with a childhood romance that ended in their forced separation by her parents. They found each other two decades later and after a joyful reunion, shared more than twenty-one years of sailing adventures, that in spite of her great personal courage, ended tragically with her illness and death from a brain tumor. Ron writes that “The brain tumor took her life, but it never took her identity, it never robbed her of her sexuality, wanderlust, or her desire for fun and adventure or her love of sailing.”

Get Her On Board
Here’s an interesting twist: Nick O’Kelly convinced Megan to drop everything for a life of endless white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue water aboard their own 50-foot sailboat. It didn’t go well and they sold the boat. Nick couldn’t shake The Cruising Dream, but Megan wanted nothing to do with little boats on big oceans ever again. Then Nick changed everything, and Megan made His Dream into Our Dream. So Nick wrote this book to help men avoid the mistakes he first made. He has been interviewing couples about cruising and is posting these interviews on his website.
